Not so many years ago we were digging in the earth seeking the pure vein, the iron to bend all our meager pay and burst the mining district of joy. Really, not so long ago that. However, it has spent more than time and, in a way, it’s as if a veil covering the memory.

Ignacio Ipiña devoted much of his work to Bilbao’s mines and to the uptown districts, protagonists of this series. He did in the days when the mine was active and later in its decline and final. Most streets no longer exist or have changed. Together and certainly improved, but very little of everything.
This series aims to provide Bilbao with a historical and artistic documentation that testifies and help us to remember that we were also miners.
